This is the method the nutrient solution flows continuously along a PVC pipe or gutter. The plant sit on plastic netted pots with their roots dangling in air and water. The plants if larger are supported from above by tying them to some support system.Only a thin layer (film) of nutrient solution flow those this pipes. This method is one of the most commercially used systems. It is ideal for plants like lettuce.
As you can see in the above displayed diagram, the setup is simple. The nutrient solution is stored in a container below and the solution is pumped up to the NFT duct using a small water pump. The duct is placed on the frame with a slight angle so that the solution that enters the duct trickles down to the other end of the duct and is returned to the storage container using pipes. The roots are kept wet by the solution 24 hours by continuously circulating the nutrient solution.
